Lomo in Vegas
For Pubcon 2007, I stayed at The Paris. My room looked out onto The Bellagio and the strip. Every half-hour Bellagio’s water show sing and dance, alternating between Sinatra (as in Frank) and Dion (as in Celene)—but I would have killed for it to be Braxton (as in Hotness).
Time stands still in Vegas. When I thought 30 minutes has passed it’d only been 15, and that makes pacing cocktails difficult. Worse still, after failing it’s impossible to know the amount of time needed to stabilize. And it’s hard to sleep. Imagine being at home in bed with a party in the living room. You want to sleep, but you want to go into the living room more. That’s what it’s like in Vegas.

In Tennessee, my grandfather showed me land our family used to own. Most tracts remain as they have for 100 years—no condos or strip malls
